Supporting the UK's biodiversity and agricultural needs
Here at The Biodiversity Land Bank (BLB), our mission is to help developers meet their offsite biodiversity requirements, ensuring they maximise the potential of their projects.
By partnering with BLB, we guide developers through the legal requirements of the Environment Act 2021. This law mandates that all significant developments must deliver at least a 10% increase in biodiversity. If developers can't achieve this on-site, they can purchase offsite biodiversity units from us. Our sites, created in collaboration with rural landowners, transform underused farmland and waste areas into thriving nature recovery zones. This approach not only boosts biodiversity but also unlocks our land bank to offsite biodiversity units available for developers to buy at significantly lower cost.
Our program also benefits landowners by offering them a way to diversify their income. By converting low-yield land into biodiversity sites, they enhance their natural landscapes and strengthen their farm's resilience.
"The Biodiversity Land Bank scheme means that we will receive funding for a minimum of 30 years to manage our land. This guarantee is a blessing to us as we are always seeking ways to maximise our land which often involves protracted and costly planning applications. We've looked at government schemes that are complicated and time consuming and simply didn't match what BLB offered. Understanding the scheme was daunting when we first looked at how we might benefit however we felt completely at ease dealing with Alastair and Robin who speak our language and who do exactly as they say. The BLB scheme is simple, risk free and in the end, we just couldn't say no."
Under the Environment Act 2021, developers must ensure their projects leave habitats in a measurably better state than pre-development. When this isn't possible on-site, they can purchase biodiversity units from our offsite habitat banks. These banks are fully funded for 30 years, providing a reliable income stream for landowners who participate. Once a habitat bank meets its revenue target, any additional profits are shared equally between the landowner and BLB.
